The Latino consumer is the consumer of the future in these United States of the Americas, and even now, on the eve of what is expected to be explosive growth in Latino population numbers and retail buying power over the coming decades, there are some 31 million Latinos in the U.S., with combined purchasing power of $370 billion, according to the National Hispanic Media Coalition. But that's nothing compared to what's coming - it is projected that by 2050 one in four Americans will be of Latino descent, and Latino economic power is growing at rates to match. Disposable income among U.S. Latinos goes up $6 million every six months, and it is projected that by 2005, some 26.5 percent of Hispanic households will earn more than $50,000 a year, up from about 17 percent this year.

These numbers alone should prompt adult producers, wholesalers and retailers to ponder ways of capitalizing on the growing cultural and economic presence of Latinos, but there's more. Put succinctly by Mark Kulkis, who produces the successful Latin-themed Chica Boom series for his own Kick Ass Productions in association with Hustler Video, "Right now anything Latino is hot. The demand is incredible." And this is true not just among Latino consumers - such Latin sex symbols as Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin are among the most popular in pop music and film, and those who flock to see their movies and buy their CDs represent a rainbow coalition of register-ringing consumers.

So what does all this mean to the great San Fernando Valley smut cabal, which has traditionally clung narrowly to the tan, blond CaliforniAryan aesthetic? Well, say some, the tan can stay, but otherwise la rubia's gonna have to make some room.
